Mika Miko Discuss Why They Left Kill Rock Stars

Honestly, we loved them, and they were so cool to us, and everyone who works there is awesome, but it started to feel like we weren’t fitting in anymore,” Suarez said. “I felt like when we were with them it was always about us being a girl band on Kill Rock Stars, and we weren’t about that at all. It was just a coincidence that we were all girls,” Clavin added. “We didn’t purposely start the band like, ‘Okay, girls, we’re gonna start a band! Let’s do this!’ Then when we started getting more recognition it was always like, ‘all-girl punk outfit Mika Miko’ or “riot grrls Mika Miko.’ We never said we were riot grrls,” comments Suarez.

“I don’t remember the first show we played at The Smell but we probably played in the front room and there were probably like, thirty people there or something. I remember it was Jim who invited us to play.”

Mika Miko Interview in Skyscraper Magazine

“[Michelle] met fellow punks and future Mika Miko vocalists Jennifer Clavin and Jenna Thornhill at a public high school in the San Fernando Valley […] Clavin had fashioned herself a Slits backpack and, upon meeting, Suarez knew immediately that they’d be friends.”

"Basically we were all at my aunt’s funeral and afterwards my babysitter’s mum was saying that she used to be in this punk band called Mico And Nico. For some reason under the circumstances we found that hilarious so we just decided to change it a bit and steal it in homage."

Mika Miko interview

The band has never had to turn down an interview, but there’s some topics Michelle will not talk about. “Immediately when someone asks like, ‘what’s it like being in an all-girl band?’ or talks about riot grrrl I’m automatically like ‘Fuck this’, I don’t wanna talk about this anymore, you know.”

In the popularity contest, there’s always someone willing to dig at Mika Miko for being an all-girl band. Somehow trying to justify that girls could never make music as good as boys. Michelle’s heard it all before, “I remember a long time ago when I was dating this guy who was in a band and he was like,’you know the only reason people like your band is because you’re all girls, right?’, or something like that, and I was like ‘actually I didn’t but that’s cool’… if people think we’re gimmicky they can fuck off, I don’t care.”
